Enjoying the Twilight
With the holidays here it was finally time for me to increase the frequency of my trips chasing Australian Bass. Typically this would mean taking advantage of the early civil twilight and getting a few hours paddling and casting in before the family arose and had finished their breakfast.
So last week I headed out for my first early morning session and headed to a system where the bass were few but the average size was quite large. I had fished this system the previous week and had a frustrating session where I had missed three fish in a couple of hours and I hoped that I could rectify that poor session with a better one.
I hit the water at 4:20AM to perfect conditions although recent wind had pushed a lot of weed and debris into pockets of the river making them inaccessible for casting. Heading downstream it wasn’t long before a cast flush against a large rock wall with my new 60mm Nobroko Softcada was plucked from the surface and I was fighting a solid bass. Once netted it measured 37cmFl and was a great start to the morning.
I decided to head back upstream and hit a pool that had some amazing structure and consistently held a few bass that were willing to play. Casting deep into a pocket were a spindly fallen tree lay perpendicular to the bank I missed another bass that picked up the lure and then dropped it a foot beneath the surface.
Paddling further downstream I eventually reached a dark pocket that was permanently n shade all day and I knew it was a place I had caught multiple bass on previous trips. Casting beneath the low hanging branches my lure landed inches from the bank and after giving it a few twitches a sizable bass swooped on the lure and took off on a solid run. Luckily he took off away from some thick timber and I was able to guide her to the kayak. At 41cmFL it was my new season PB although I hoped I would beat it before the season close!
I headed upstream and decided to explore further than I had before. I only managed one other hit on the surface that I managed to capture on film but the rest of the morning I spent more time exploring than casting.
With these guys starting o find their singing voices I’m definitely going to make the most of the holidays and head out on more of these sessions over the holidays.
