For those with an addiction, obsession or passion for Australian Bass Fishing

Perfect Start to the Day!

Well I headed out again this morning to hit the water and immerse myself in the peaceful awakening of all manner of wildlife on a beautiful Aussie river. With the dawn getting earlier and earlier I was up at 3:45AM and this still did not give me time to get on the water before twilight. Reaching the launch site I was happy to see that recent rains had swollen the river a little which was encouraging and I hoped that this may have turned the bass on.

A quick paddle and I reached the top of my target pool. My last few visits to this spot had the bass holding mostly at the top of the pool and I was fairly sure after recent rains that they would probably be here again anticipating a potential run upstream. Third cast and I was on. I was targeting the grassy banks where the river levels had risen enough to cover fresh green vegetation and potentially drown a few insects for the bass to chase down. The Nobroko Softcada had landed within an inch of the green fringe and a couple of twitches was all that was needed to get him to belt the lure. At 34cmFl he was no monster but a welcome bonus to a morning paddle.

The water also seemed to be teeming with platypus’. At one point I counted six up the length of the large pool and some seemed to be playing tag with each other. Maybe it was breeding season? I continued targeting the banks that had vegetation lining the edge and was eventually rewarded with another surface strike and I connected and landed another rat bass at 27cmFL.

The next hour or so was very slow with no bass taking an interest in either the Softcada or the Shad after multiple casts ate some great snags and banks. I eventually decided it was time to head home for breakfast and decided to cast the Duel Hardcore Shad for the return journey. It wasn’t until I reached the top of the pool that my lure was belted at the bottom f the retrieve and I was into a spirited fight from a reasonable bass.

He slipped into the net and I had caught a nice 38cmFL bass to round off a wonderful morning on the water. As I only have the opportunity to get out every 3 weeks these morning sessions really give me the fix I need between trips. Can’t wait for the next one!
